@brainvsbook @xguilbert One of the most amazing (I think) shoujo mangaka of the early 80s was Yoshimi Uchida who had some extremely well received modern gothic works from the late 70s to mid 80s and then just decided to leave the industry. (Her biggest hit Liddell just started coming out in French!) pic.twitter.com/kWAXoUqkCC

@EHGSuperstar @xguilbert She is the artist I'm talking about in my original tweet! Apparently, she decided she'd said everything she had to say with manga and just ghosted!

@EHGSuperstar @brainvsbook @xguilbert It didn't just start in French. All 3 volumes were available the same day.

@sugar_yin @EHGSuperstar @xguilbert I would *love* to know how they managed that license. Apparently, her work is out of print in Japan bc no one can get a hold of her to get copyright permission.

@brainvsbook @sugar_yin @xguilbert @haaschimoto I think has more info about licensing her work. All I know is the French publishers are very niche (which is why I'm particularly happy to support them--) and... it seems genuine. But I've long heard the same as you.

@sugar_yin @brainvsbook @xguilbert :O For some reason I only ever ordered the first. Must remedy that ASAP.

@brainvsbook @xguilbert Gosh I feel even more dense than usual! I admit I didn't even try to translate your original tweet, but of course the years add up. I definitely share your fascination!

@sugar_yin @brainvsbook @xguilbert How easy were the books to find in France? If I recall the copy I ordered was from the publisher as fnac and amazon fr didn’t list them.

@sugar_yin @brainvsbook @xguilbert Also @sugar_yin I was reading some of the French reviews and they all call it seinen. (Does Bouquet magazine sound seinen?) I swear in France fandom anytime they take a josei or even shoujo (Banana Fish) title seriously, they make a point of claiming it’s seinen 😾

Xavier Guilbert @xgu @xguilbert
@EHGSuperstar @sugar_yin @brainvsbook I think one of the reasons behind that "seinen" classification has to do with what "shoujo" represents for the majority of French readers, vs what it might be for Japanese readers. in France, "shoujo" is often associated with "romances for girls".

@EHGSuperstar @sugar_yin @brainvsbook and that association can be putting off some potential readers. so anything that veers away from that definition gets labelled "seinen" by the publishers. and then purist fans criticize them for that choice, leaving them caught between a rock and a hard place.

@EHGSuperstar @sugar_yin @brainvsbook in my opinion, it's a bit like "gekiga" in reverse: in most of the Western world, "gekiga" is now synonymous with alternative graphic novels (more or less), and one would be hard pressed to make Golgo 13 fit in that category.

Xavier Guilbert @xgu @xguilbert
@EHGSuperstar @sugar_yin @brainvsbook to sum up, in France, "gekiga" has become high-brow, while "shoujo" is low-brow, resulting in the exclusion of titles that would fit in those categories to fit this caricatural view.

posted at 15:01:30

@EHGSuperstar @brainvsbook @xguilbert I pre ordered them on the publishers's website. They are not easy to find IRL or on amazon/fnac !

@EHGSuperstar @brainvsbook @xguilbert Not the reviews: Black Box called it seinen first. Reviewers just follow this like sheeps...

@sugar_yin @brainvsbook @xguilbert I assume that’s just cuz they’re a small publisher?
posted at 18:49:40
@EHGSuperstar @brainvsbook @xguilbert That's because it's a niche publisher. When they started it was online order only and then you could find their books in manga shops. But this title is really niche so it was better for me to preorder them directly to make sure to have my own set.

@xguilbert @sugar_yin @brainvsbook Thanks! That does all make sense and I get too that in different locations these Japanese terms take on their own connotations. It still irks me though 😉
I’m also reminded of how much trouble Viz had introducing shoujo/josei in the 90s when I discovered them. Slogans like

@xguilbert @sugar_yin @brainvsbook “Made by women, read by EVERYONE” (uh ok) the first batch of shoujo releases between 1996-98 either said on the back cover that shoujo manga meant literary manga (this was how the Moto Hagios were released) or that MEN loved and read this (for Banana Fish). At the time, though,

@xguilbert @sugar_yin @brainvsbook they were all commercial failures (much to my annoyance it would take another ten+ years for them to finish Banana F). It’s not that they were wrong really (the Hagio titles were literary) but by marketing them this way they just seemed to alienate everyone.
