この件、米国事情を見た限り、少なくとも米国で鉛弾規制が始まったのは猛禽類以前に水鳥への影響を重く見たことが先だったと思います。

医療機関が無計画に乱立してて、少ないスタッフが全員酷使されないと回らない現場が多いのが根本的な問題で、妊娠出産とか、病気で働けない人が悪者になってしまうんだよなぁ。。
医療機関を集約化してスタッフの数を増やさないと、この問題の解決は難しい。

To wit: I said the observations “confirm” the existence of a plume on Europa, but the statistics don’t support that claim. Instead, it’s more like, “maaaaaaybe, but also maybe not”.

8/ Cassini detected organic (carbon-based) molecules in Enceldus’ plumes. Maybe the same is true for Europa. We won’t know until we go there. Happily, we are! Europa Clipper is mission to look at Europa and its ocean very carefully, checking for conditions for life.

7/ Conditions for life under Europa’s ice may actually be pretty clement. That’s more than amazing the think about. There could be protozoa there, or even weird alien fish. Or it may be a completely lifeless tank of water. We just don’t know.

6/ Saturn’s moon Enceladus also does this, for the same reasons, and those geysers definitely have a pattern to them. So seeing the more detailed behavior from Europa would be really useful.

5/ The astronomers only saw 1 plume out of 17 different observations. So this isn’t a constant thing, but intermittent. I hope they can get more dedicated observations to try to figure out if there’s a pattern to when and where they erupt.

4/ The lack of atmosphere means it’s in space moment it gets past the surface. It expands into a huge cloud, gets lit by the distant Sun, and reacts by emitting IR light. That’s how it was found.

3/ Basically, pressure in the undersurface ocean forces water up cracks in Europa’s thick ice shell. The force is so strong, and gravity so weak (less than our Moon’s) that the water shoots up about 200 km off the surface!

2/ We’ve had pretty good indirect evidence for these water plumes for a while (see the article in the OP) but this is the first direct evidence, seeing the infrared light emitted by water molecules themselves.
