*correction* sleep deprived me misread how big the connective cells are. they’re not 0.6x the radius of the sun, they’re 0.6x the radius of the STAR!!! that puts the convective cells of Betelgeuse at ~480x the radius of the Sun. THEY’RE HUGE!!! thanks @Astro_MiguelM for catching!

we actually used simulations of convective pulsations and waves to determine when it'll explode! using pulsations to probe stellar interiors is akin to geologists using seismology to understand what's going on beneath the surface of the Earth, we just call it "asteroseismology".

both types of pulsations cause Betelgeuse to DIM and BRIGHTEN over time. while some pulsations may cause this cycle to be regular, other pulsations may cause it to be weird! that could potentially make it dim a lot more at one point, or brighten a lot more at others.

let's summarize what we've covered up till now. Betelgeuse is a semi-variable star, which means that it pulsates in a semi-regular way. the regular pulsations are a result of changes in the rate of emitted radiation from the core. the weird pulsations come from convective cells.
