また、細胞膜の外側が酸化鉄に一部覆われている細胞化石はあったけど、今回中心部が染色された細胞化石は透明な方だったから、細胞がよい状態で保存されるのに必要な条件は、化石化においてある程度条件的に縛られる酸化鉄より、もっと一般的な物質であるケイ酸塩による置換だと考えられるよ。

今回は厚さ約0.005mmのパラフィン切片をH&E染色して、色が染まるかどうか、染まるとしたらどのような形態かを観察したよ。もちろん染色の解釈には比較が必要だから、今回はニワトリの軟骨を同じように処理してH&E染色し、化石の染色がどのような状態を示すかの指標としたよ。

細胞の細かい状態の違いが反映されてるなら、更にもっと細かい部分が保存されているかもしれないね。という事で、「ヘマトキシリン」と「エオシン」という、組織学では一般的な染色「H&E染色」を使用したよ。ヘマトキシリンは細胞核と核酸、エオシンは細胞内外に含まれるタンパク質を染色するよ。

こういう細胞の生死の情報は、普通は細胞そのものが化石として残らない以上分からないものだけど、今回調べたのは軟骨細胞だったという点が重要だよ。軟骨細胞は死んでも常温で2週間以上分解せず、血管など細菌が侵入する部分が無く、しばらく腐敗しない点が、化石化の猶予を与えたと考えられるよ。

@TeacherhaGreat フロリダ（タンパ空港近く）の学校を訪れたとき、子どもたちが下校するのと同時に陽気なメキシコ系の方たちが校内に入ってきて、楽しそうに歌いながらお掃除を始めたのには驚きました。同じ公教育でも日本とは全くシステムが違っていて、学校清掃も大事な雇用の場になっているようです。

東京港野鳥公園はまさにかつて埋立地の水溜りにシギチが集まり、保全の機運が高まって今の形になったけど、周辺の環境変化なのか人工干潟の難しさなのか、シギチ自体の減少なのかよく知らないけど、当初思い描いたほどの結果にはならなかった。それでも今も少しは渡来はしているのがまだ救いだけど。
