We could only do this as Tonga is covered by three of the most advanced weather satellites in orbit: @NOAASatellites GOES-17, @JMA_kishou's Himawari-8 and Korea's GK-2A.
These sats send back pictures of Tonga every ten minutes, so we could track the eruption as it happened.

While on paper North Korea's air force has some 500 aircraft, it remains particularly challenge to assess it's 'active fleet' at any given type.
Putting 180 aircraft in the air is no small feat for this ageing to obsolete air force.
